and because I just finished binge‑watching the Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, I wanted to see that stretch of sea where Ae‑sun and Gwan‑sik live.
So I threw my luggage together overnight and rushed to the garden of Jiangsu‑Zhejiang‑Shanghai - Jeju Island.
Here’s the blue jelly‑like sea I’m sending to you from afar, because it’s too unreal in its beauty, I want all of you to see it together.
As an islander myself, I’m forever captivated by all kinds of isles.
I envy friends who get to gaze at the big, blue ocean, especially that clear, shimmering, “jelly-sea” kind of sea!
In Jeju, the sea never runs out. These few days, my itinerary has been all about conquering the entire island:
First the south, then the east; after the east, the west; and once the west is seen, then the north.
Snoopy Garden
A paradise for kids over 300 months old! The happy home of the Peanuts gang!
With an indoor museum and an outdoor garden, even three hours isn’t enough to explore it all!
The only regret was missing some photo ops with the adorable IP. Next time I’ll make sure to get those!
Manor Blanc
Jeju isn’t just about the sea. It also boasts seas of flowers, and one of them feels like an endless summer bloom.
Right now, hydrangeas are in full bloom, huge flower walls everywhere, perfect for photo ops!
Seogwipo
A spot highly recommended by a friend, and also the filming location for the hit K‑drama When Life Gives You Tangerines.
Wandering along the long coastal road, you’ll find nothing but a few fellow walkers and the occasional local omoni (aunties).
Beneath the dazzling sunlight, the view is all dark volcanic rocks and deep‑blue sea, supremely chill.
Strolling on, you might run into haenyeo, the wrinkled, water‑soaked sea women at work.
There’s no itinerary here, just peaceful moments of daydreaming, wandering, watching waves crash over black basalt reefs, and that’s enough.
Cow Island
A small island named for its shape, like a reclining cow.
Even here, the weather divides the landscape, like the difference between Jiangbei and Zhenhai. On the east side, the sky is blissfully clear and sunny, dazzling you to squint. But on the west, fog rolls in from the dark earth. Up north, the 260 m‑high Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak vanishes, and in the south, a light rain begins. In no time, Udo is blanketed in mist, gone is the view.
Truly a place “eating off the weather”: sunny spells bring sheer serenity, while overcast or rainy days feel apocalyptic.
Udo’s white-sand beaches are stunning, from the brightness of shell‑calcium deposits, to the transparent “glass” sea, to the deep navy‑black water offshore. I half‑expected to be in the South of France or the Mediterranean (even though I’ve never been, ha!).
Sea breeze, tides, reefs, gravel—no filter needed for the ocean and sky here.
Moonriver (Woljeong‑ri)
Korea’s cafe scene has truly leveled up with locations that are simply sublime! Picture this: floor‑to‑ceiling windows framing a blue ocean view, windmills turning in the breeze, surfers riding waves. It’s pure bliss.
This spot is a social‑media darling: through a hollowed‑out tree trunk, you glimpse tall coconut palms and red neon signage, instantly transported to a California coastline.
Yewol-ri
A perfect place to sip coffee and daydream until sunset.
On Jeju Island, what to eat? Eat kimchi! Napa cabbage kimchi! Radish kimchi! Onion kimchi!
They first bring out seven or eight small side dishes and dipping sauces, the dishwashing aunties in the kitchen must be exhausted ~
In convenience stores, they have all kinds of instant ramen and snacks, using Papago to scan and translate, but when I got too impatient, I just chose by picture. Every blind pick turned out great, no disappointments!
Peanut-flavored Udo, tangerine-flavored Jeju, a romantic utopia.
The meaning of travel is nothing more than planning and serendipity.
Snoopy Garden
Manor Blanc
